28-300 versus 70-300 will be an apple to orange comparsion. Generally the IQ of 3x-4x zoom over a 10x zoom will be superior.

As to cost if you are going to 1K and want indoor shots I'd say spring for a 2.8 zoom like the Tamron/Sigma. If IQ is a priority Tamron, if focus a Sigma. The 70-200 VRI is good 2.8 but will likely run you about 1.6K used, but worth the investment.

Make sure that VR is what you need and not both aperture and fast shutter speed for indoor action. Maybe even a fast prime might be what you are looking for.
