Curious as to why it may be that internal lens elements would be physically rotated as the group of internal elements is moved in order affect the composite Focal Length. Sounds like that might perhaps be harder to accomplish than would simply moving them on a linear path relative to the other fixed elements ? My mechanical aptitude has never been a strong point, however, (so I ask).

If that is in this case true, it would say a lot about the symptoms (which remain on the right side, and appear to gradually lessen as Focal length is increased). If not in this case true, not definitive.
