Death of reflex cameras in general Re: The death of APS-C
In reply to George Paulides, May 25, 2012

That's part of what Nikon is thinking IMO: lots of people that have either APS-C, m43, Nex, but that would like to have a 135 format camera, some like you and me, old hats from 135 film with lenses from that era.

Then there are the newcomers, that have wondered if a FF digital is actually much better than smaller formats. In some aspects it is, in most not, but that's only part of the story, many will go, some will saty, some will sell, meanwhile Nikon sells a lot of lenses, which is the cash cow for them.

APS mirror box cameras will die slowly, but APS-C will stay IMO as a sensor format, now without mirrors. So, "death of APS-C" means "death of reflex APS-C". But then, in 10 years all reflex cameras will be gone, any format, except for specialized use. Actually, my guess is Nikon and Canon will soon develop a hybrid VF, Nikon already has PDAF that doesn't require a mirror and works pretty well, soon it'll be better than the mirror system.

But cameras will continue to come in all flavors and sizes, from the mechanical Leica M to the all auto V1. And size of sensor will always determine the variables, like IQ, dof control, size of lenses, etc. Nikon and Canon will continue to dominate, just because of large userbase and name recognition. Canon new ML system will lead the market in less than a year, write it up.

If it comes in around US1600 (obviously more the Europeans and for Australians) I am in. The prerequisite is that it will need to be compatible with the older Nikon lens. I still have my Nikon glass from the F100 days.
