my bad... you were arguing against m43... rather than for it... (ditto me)

under identical FOV and shooting distances

(changing distances totally alters the perspective, and is NOT 'equivalent' in any way visually)

FF
A) a 50/1.4 = 35.7mm diameter aperture for DOF
B) a 50/5.6 = 8.9mm diameter aperture for DOF

m43
C) a 25/2.8 = 8.9mm diameter aperture for DOF
[this will look closest to B above, not as close as A]

D) a 25/0.7 = 35.7mm diameter aperture for DOF

[this will look closest to A above, not as close as B... but then, no such m43 lens exists]

In my situation, I use a FF with a 24mm f/1.4:

FF
E) a 24/1.4 = 17.1mm diameter aperture for DOF
F) a 24/5.6 = 4.3mm diameter aperture for DOF

m43
G) a 12/2.8 = 4.3mm diameter aperture for DOF
[this will look closest to F above, not as close as E]

H) a 12/0.7 = 17.1mm diameter aperture for DOF

[this will look closest to E above, not as close as F... but then, no such m43 lens exists...]

and anyone more into zoom lenses instead of primes for the same range of FOV, it gets excessively large and heavy (e.g. 43d lens 12-60mm)

as often reiterated elsewhere

m43 strength is generally in relatively consistent overall high dof images, which most folks like (same as why compact film cameras predominantly smaller apertures anyway for most models; and disposable cameras; and vast majority of integrated digicams)

nothing wrong with that; it is a popular effect, favored by most.

but truly ultra shallow dof, is confined to those with lenses and sensors that combine to have DOF uncommon to those restricted in maximum apertures available for a given focal length FOV equivalent for subject framing at identical perspectives (identical distances)

many who have opted for m43, aren't into such shallow dof, and are perfectly satisfied with less shallow dof, as restricted by their much smaller apertured lenses.
