Nikon 28-300mm or Tamron 70-300mm?
May 25, 2012

I currently use a Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G (non-VR) as a second lens on my Nikon D7000. For outdoor use, I have no complaints whatsoever, I always use shutter priority set to 1/500 (1/(1.5*focal length)) or faster and the results are OK. The problem is when I use the lens indoor such as in a concert or sports event since it lacks VR.

I am thinking of replacing it with a VR-equipped lens. Since I may migrate to full-frame in the future (thinking D600 when it comes out at US$1,500), I prefer an FX lens. The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR would normally be the logical choice but I find it too expensive for its focal range - if I were to choose it, I might as well stretch the budget a bit more and get the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G VR.

If on the other hand I decide to go low budget, I am thinking of the Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC which is far cheaper than the Nikon 70-300mm VR and is in my opinion more acceptable price-wise for its zoom range.

What are your experiences and thoughts on the Nikon 28-300mm VR and Tamron 70-300mm VC? Thanks.
