renting fast glass - advice for ONE lens to try?

Hi, I have a D90/several lenses but have not yet dipped my toe into the "pro glass" realm. I have some trips/events coming up (week in Yellowstone/Tetons; college graduation; weekend at Washington beach near marshes/sloughs/etc) and was thinking about renting ONE lens for about 3 weeks to try out really excellent glass. I'll be driving, so can take several lenses (meaning the ones I own, and "rental to be named later") along on each trip.

I have the following lenses (Nikon/Nikor unless otherwise indicated):
Tokina 11-16
16-85
35/1.8
50/1.8
85/1.8
55-200
70-300

I'm leaning towards renting the 17-55/2.8, but also considering the 24-70/2.8. Thoughts? If I'm honest with myself I'll admit this may be a slippery slope towards purchasing at least one lens of this quality... Also, I do not plan to go FX anytime soon, if ever.
