Advice for being "chief photographer" during a family reunion

In July my family, friends, and their familes will be at an all day reunion at a popular amusement park (up to 50 altogether.) I'm expecting plenty of daylight, heat, crowds, excited children, and shots taken on the fly. I have been asked to be the "chief photographer." I've made it clear that professional quality photographs are unrealistic (I'm an amateur landscape guy, not a professional event photographer), but I'll do my best and supply JPEGs a week afterwards.

I would appreciate any advice including camera settings, equipment selection (rent a lens?), poses, organization, etc.!

Equipment: Nikon D300S with an 18-70mm zoom lens. Nikon SB-700 external flash. Tripod. Plenty of batteries and memory cards.
