They do not need a power cord because they are powered through the FireWire or USB cable.

You will probably need at least two, because I doubt an Air has enough disk space for a long trip of raw images. You'll need one external for the main collection and another as the backup. If you want more durability and speed, you can put SSDs into those cases, but again SSDs cost a lot more per GB.

If your conditions will be harsh, you may want one of the more ruggedized cases from other companies, but they cost more.

I agree that an Air can be better for a long trip for the size and weight savings alone.
