The high light is clipped by both cameras . The sun has no detail even in the under exposed D800 photo. Your gonna need allot more than 14 stops of DR to control that kind of high light without ND filters.

The best you can hope for is a round sun, it's the areas of sky approaching the Sun I always find ugly in digital photography. Where a cloud of various densities comes in and out of range, yellow sunsets that just go blocky yellow or red. Not just the Sun but water also. If a camera has a better DR and can minimise this effect that's got to be good. What bothers me is the millions that accept these effects without question but will split hairs over resolution differences too small to worry about and countless other things that make little difference. But an ugly sky is quite acceptable.
