Pick up most any pre-digital manual focus film single lens reflex (SLR) camera and look through the finder. The center split circle is the rangefinder prism. view something with say, a sharply defined vertical edge like the edge of a building corner. You will notice that it will be split apart in the rangefinder area. Focus the lens until the two split lines come together as one. You are now in perfect focus on that edge. If you can quickly and easily focus on a particular area of the scene it allows you to selectively control the overall look of your image. Also it allows one to use the Depth of Field scales on the lenses to bring the optimum range of your image into "adequate " focus.

(Yes, I know that there is a controversy that DOF scales are obsolete, that there is only one point of sharpest focus and that digital is sharper than film etc. but in real life photography, depth of field scales provide useful tools to solve common problems we all face on assignments.
