Hmm. I'd say it would be more like 12 inches (at a stretch) and for portraits you don't want to be at the extreme of acceptable DoF, you want the eye(s) bang on the plane of focus.

If you look closely at the full size image (link below), you can clearly see that my son on the left is out of focus even though he appears to be on the same plane and certainly within 15-20 inches of the focal plane.. how do you explain this?

Hard to say. Perhaps the difference is greater than it seems; a few inches is all it would take to produce this result.
