7D boady strap mount eyelet coatin wearing off,

I went to the local Canon Service Center here in Bangkok, Thailand this morning as I wanted to get my Canon 7D body cleaned as there was a lot of dust in the seals that I could not get out.
I also asked for a quotation to change the top cover as one of the strap mount eyelet was slightly worn out as the black coating had gone. This is very unusual as I never had a similar problem with my previous Canon bodies (10D, 20D, 40D and 50D). I was quoted a price of 8,058.17 bahts or 270 US Dollars! This is simply exhorbitant for a piece of plastic. When I complained I was told that it was more than a plastic cover as it included electronic components, fiber optics etc.... surely if these eyelets are proned to wear off that easily, there must be a better way tresolve this. Has anyone encountered a similar situation?
