I am left wondering what Olympus's strategy will be in the future though. They've talked about "one beautiful system" and they've been releasing lots of primes lately, which definitely keeps with the whole "micro" part of the system.

A micro four-thirds version of the weathersealed 14-54/2.8-3.5 would in my opinion be fully competitive with the Pana 12-35/2.8 and might even be a little cheaper without the OIS. Giving away a stop to reach that much further isn't much of a disadvantage.

Well its 12mm vs. 14mm so while the Olympus has a longer reach, it also isn't as wide. The Panasonic lens looks like its very well balanced on the E-M5 but using the four thirds simulation website, the 14-54 Olympus lens looks significantly bigger.

Well d'oh, that's because it's the four-thirds version. A version for micro four thirds would of course be smaller. Just like the micro-four thirds version of the 14-45, 25, 9-18 et cetera was significantly smaller.

A 14-54/2.8-3.5 or even a 12-60/2.8-3.5 would in my opinion be much more useful for those of us who won't be needing the OIS, and they probably won't be more expensive than the 12-35. These lenses have excellent optical qualities.

Personally, I just don't think the Olympus four thirds lenses fit in well with the micro four thirds concept. Olympus went for ultimate optical quality at the cost of size. I think they should release an adapter capable of doing phase detection, like in the Sony NEX/Alpha line and just call it, "one beautiful system", and call it a day as well.

Nonsense. Just because Panasonic made a okay 25mm/1.4 for the four thirds didn't make it impossible for them to make an okay 25mm/1.4 for the micro mount also. We're not talking about f/2.0 monsters here, and if Panasonic can make a f/2.8 lens in a small form factor, rest easy that Olympus can as well.

I'd like to see them work on new lenses that fit in with the micro four thirds concept, kudos to Panasonic for doing just that. Olympus is pumping out great primes but when they finish that, I'd like to see them pump out some great zooms as well.

Yes. Like a 14-54 for the micro four-thirds. Or maybe a 12-60?

Hey Macx. I think we are on the same page but there is some slight confusion in what we are talking about.

I'm talking about the use of existing four thirds lenses on micro four thirds bodies. Olympus said they want to make "one beautiful system". If you look at the size of four thirds lenses, they are sized to be used with much larger bodies than the m43rds bodies.

Unless I misunderstood you, you're talking about new optical designs of lenses that are similar in aperture and focal length to those of four thirds lenses. If that's the case, then we are in agreement. Micro four thirds lenses have gotten smaller compared to their four thirds versions and I think Olympus can make smaller zooms than before, but this essentially is making a completely new lens design that probably won't have much to do with their four thirds lenses.

I think Olympus is trying to "merge" the two systems though so that they have a full lineup of zooms for both systems without having to create any new designs. I disagree with that approach. I think we need new designs which fit in with the size difference between four thirds and micro four thirds.
