Do you mean a general problem with the CAM3500 AF modules used in all Nikon pro and semi-pro cameras? I'm not sure that would be the case, but it's possible. I have owned several D300/D700 cameras and have not seen this before. Doesn't mean someone else could not have had the problem.

Wait, you might have hit on something. The only difference in the new CAM 3500FX module is light sensitivity and the ability of the central points to focus with f8 max aperture. If you could see this in action on a problem camera you would see that once you hit the central area, 9 points I think, my D800E is razor sharp. I wonder if it might have something to do with that transition to f5.6 points? Interesting stuff. Can't wait to see how it shakes out.
