7 years and 2 cameras it been the USB cable for me, it's a little slower in transferring images and it's a simple process that works fine. I hot and or cold plug it and never an issue unless my PC is about ready to crash.

I have used a reader a few times but it took more steps to get the images to transfer to my preferred location so I've just continue to use the cable. I always keep the cable plugged into the PC and ready to plug into the camera.

I wonder about the possibility you might have a USB port issue with your PC, it does seem strange that you have had 2 new cameras do the exact same thing! Not sure how you would test that. I know USB is 5 volts open circuit.
