at £200 i think i mite put one on.

I stopped using "protective" filters on a $1500 tele zoom, as there were times when it would degrade the image (unrelated to flare/glare). Not reliably and predictably, but enough to feel the protective filter not useful unless conditions deemed one prudent (harsh environment).

If you're worried about the front lens element, use the hood. If you feel better with a protective filter, use a MRC filter, and remove it if in doubt.
