Wrong! Never focus on infinity. You lose most of your depth-of-field by doing that. Even if everything is sharp in front of, and in back of where you focus, you could lose most of your valuable dof at infinity because (for landscapes) the dof is about 1/3 in front of where you focus and 2/3 in back, so if you focus at infinity you lose 2/3 of your sharpness and only keep 1/3.

And, since we can more easily tell when something nearby is not real sharps than something in the distance, if it doesn't seem like you can get everything from front to back in focus it is wisest to favor the closer areas by focusing a little closer to be sure.
