Re: HX30V - compared to A610 Photo

I think you'll find the overall quality of the HX30V better than the A610 when viewed at a 5MP size (which is the size of the A610). The sensor holds up well to ISO1600, and even though you lose a 1/2-1/3 stop due to the lens, you still end up a solid 1.5 steps faster. Add the higher resolution and you can gain about a stop or two worth of effective noise reduction when compared at 5MP final print size. Just look at the D800 vs D3 discussions...the D800 isn't really much better pixel-for-pixel, but with 3X the pixels, the noise is much finer and less noticable in a fixed print size.

For a real travel camera, being able to zoom out to 25mm (eq) is day-and-night better than a 35mm anytime your inside a building, and can be nice in town or on the shore where there's only so far you can back up to get the big picture. And, of course, don't discount the long end of the zoom.

The question is how many posters are you going to print? If the answer is in the single digits (how much wall space do you really have?), then the HX30v will do a better job by a fairly good margin. If you are willing to post process, you might get more out the new SX260 by Canon, though.
