If you know you are going to be near then a wide angle lens will be more useful than a tele, also a wide lens will help you follow the action better and help you focus faster and more accurately. Shutter speed around 250 is what I use for moving subjects and set the SLR around 1600ASA if there is not much light around. If there is plenty of light then 800ASA will be fine too. You will probably need to remove some noise in photoshop if you go over 800ASA but using 1600ASA will give you less motion blur.

If you use fast speeds indoors then more likely your aperture should be as open as possible so stick around f/3.5 if this is the limit of your lens, avoid zooming because zooming the lens will change it's aperture to f/4 or f/4.5 or even more, making your photos darker and your histogram poor.

If light is really dim then you can try 200speed and/or 3200ASA but below 200speed you won't find many keepers.

Well, in this kind of photoshoot a f/2.8 zoom lens or even better a sigma 20mm f/1.8 [fixed lens] would be a better help, but if you shoot a lot of photos you will have some good ones at the end.
