Nikon clarify what the likely problem is at http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/lens/zoom/widezoom/af-s_nikkor16-35mmf_4d_ed_vr/index.htm

At 16mm f4 the corners fall off extremely quickly beyond the boundary of DX coverage in Nikon's f4 MTF.
The 14-24 is not as bad, but still not good in the corners at 14mm f2.8.

With either lens at f4, widest zoom setting, the 14-24 performs usefully better, but at f8-11 I find there is not a lot in it.
My summing up is
1/ the 14-24 has the fastest focus - no surprise as it has the fastest aperture.

2/ by my standards the 14-24 is some way from good in the corners at 14mm f2.8, but still beats the 16-35 at 16mm f4.

3/ both lenses have by my standards quite a bit of distortion at the wide end, with the 16-35 having most.
4/ the 16-35 pluses are lower cost, less weight, and VR.

5/ the bulbous 14-24 front element if damaged is not going to be cheap to repair.

6/ the 14-24 with it's bulbous front element picks up flare spots more easily than the 16-35.
7/ you decide which feature set best fits your needs.

I own both lenses and I think that's a pretty good summation of the two lenses Leonard.
