I'm not a gun lover by any stretch of the imagination, but I went to nice schools with many rich hunting aficionados, and in fact, spending $1,000 on a gun is akin to spending $100 on a point and shoot camera. I am a guitar lover and own some pricey gear (a Gibson solid carved top archtop "jazz box" costs more than a D800, just for example), but Walnut guitars are very, very rare and pricey these days - Why? Because it's the wood of choice for fine rifles, and gun buyers are willing to pay much much more for that wood than even crazy guitar buyers

So whatever the other merits of his argument, spending a grand on a gun isn't at all out of the ordinary.
