There is no such a thing as "too much DR" ;). One may survive with whatever s/he has, but more DR is always a good thing. I can easily see situations where even the excellent 13-14 EV from a D800 is not enough, unless one is happy to settle for noisy/colorless shadows or just plain blown HLs.

Never forget that digital is more like slides (positive) than like negative film, thus HLs tend to show ugly transitions that need to be avoided at all costs (if you like smooth tonal transitions), unlike with negative film. I wished somehow technology would make it possible to have an actual "digital negative".
