Totally over rated and overstated.

It does not hurt the image when the importance is composition, lighting etc. I have yet to see people walk up to a large print and "ooh its so blurry, must be diffraction limiting at F22"
Its a none event.

I am not saying the use of DOF either way is good or bad, but DL is a none event and event these shots that Marshall posted are proof that the image looks a lot better at F16 than F8 despite any DL.

Small amounts of diffraction are overstated
They can have less effect then an AA filter

I just read a review of a lens on one of the top review sites (can't remember) and they said that although diffraction with this lens on FF starts at f11 it wasn't noticeable until f22
Make of that what you will

Ps: it hard extracting much value from this forum these das due to the gaggle of "nasty" self-opinionated bores who spend all their time buying cameras and taking pictures of brick walls

Here's the link to a gallery of a guy who's been shooting his D800 & lenses at very small apertures for increased DOF and he's obviously not afraid of the diffraction concerns of everyone else, including Thom.

While we can't see the original full sizes here, looks to me like they're pretty darn good.
