I would vote for the 50 1.8D to gain an appreciation for primes. This is the 35mm equivalent of a 75mm, so would be great for candid portraits. The other nice thing about the 50 1.8D is you can reverse it and use it as a macro lens! I just ordered a reverse mount, and it isn't in yet, but I have seen some pretty amazing results online. Plus, you can get refurbs for under $100. All things considered, it's a great value.
