Sigma 500mm f/4.5

I can't afford the Nikon 500 f/4 - so I'm asking if anyone who owns, or has some experience with the Sigma 500 f/4.5, could confirm if this lens would perform admirably on my Nikon D4 for wildlife/ bird photography. I realise I will miss out on Vibration Reduction, but is the image quality and focus speed up to the task of serious wildlife/bird photography? I am also really wanting to know if the Sigma handles a 1.4x converter without losing too much image quality. My other option is to purchase a Nikon 300 f/2.8 plus 2x converter (when needed), as this gives me VR and a much faster (and probably sharper) lens for sports and closer subjects at 300mm, and the option of a 600mm equivalent when birding.

Cheers,
Gary.
