Using Compatible Ink Cartridges

In my part of the world, the genuine cartridges are usually out of stock. I use only Epson Printers. In an emergency, can I use a compatible cartridge until such time, I can get hold of a genuine one ? What are the problems I am likely to encounter ? Thnks
