Is my D7000 attracting too much attention?

I was processing this photo when I realized that several of the people appear to be looking right into my lens!

This kind of "camera awareness" seem to be becoming more of a problem for me when I am using a DSLR, as so few people seem to be lugging around big cameras anymore, and instead relying on cell phones for their photographic tool. With the D7000 and Tokina 16-50 f2.8, I sometimes feel as conspicuous as the paparazzi! (Maybe it is time to get a Nikon V1 instead?)
