I bought my 14-24/2.8 on ebay, as well as my D3. It depends on the lens and the seller, really. I look for other photographers - the lens came from a working art photog, and the body from a wedding and newpaper photog. Both were in amazingly good condition (how a photoj. keeps a body that clean I'll never know; must shoot council meetings).

I would not buy any lens that has had QA issues - for example I went retail from a reputable shop for my Sigma 120-300/2.8. The current crop is good, the last crop was hit or miss. On a $3k-$4k lens with some versions having known issues...well, no chances.

The key for me is to know the seller. Ask a question and look up the seller on the web. Look for someone with top feedback, low numbers, and (preferrably) a long history.
