I would suggest try a couple of freebies first such as


Try your own camera software for RAW conversion if you shoot in RAW.

Whilst the digital darkroom is important you can't do much with poor imagery to start with. Get to know your camera, get the picture right in camera, ensure focus is sharp, image level, exposure correct. This is the most important thing.

There are many excellent photographers on the net who do not use commercial software or use inexpensive software

Try some out and see what feels comfortable and fits your workflow.
