is it really that difficult to check whether or not there's a card in the slot before shooting?

No Kidding, the first thing I do when I turn on the Camera is take a quick check to see how many shots I have left. This is such a basic act of common sense I am actually amused by how many people are not capable of doing such a simple thing and cry about the camera maker.
