Dynamic Range: D4, D800, 5DIII
May 17, 2012

I'm curious, which dynamic range test is more accurate? The one done by dpreview or DXO Mark?

I was just looking through some of the charts for dynamic range, and the D800 at ISO 100 tops out at a whopping 14EV stops. Just plain unbelievable. At least based on tests done by DXO Mark.

D4 tests slightly lower, at around 13EV stops at ISO 100.

5DIII scores lowest, at around 11.8EV stops.

However, looking at dpreview's review of the D800, D4 in contrast, scores lower than the 5DIII.

One thing I don't seem to understand is DXO Mark's Screen vs. Print graph. I mean, either the data is there or it isn't. Doesn't matter whether it's shown as a print or on the screen.Once you clip highlights, you clip highlights, and there is no data anymore. Same goes for blacks. Once clipped, they're clipped. So why the print vs. screen thing?

Well, in either case, just wanted your thoughts on this. In either case, it looks like the D800 is the new de facto landscape camera, huh?

14 stops, man, that's unbelievable.
