Most here seem to recognize that there are two dimensions to this:

  • an axis with quality of the gear

  • an axis with qualities of the photographer.

Now, in a three dimensional universe two axes need not cross, which means the debate is unsolvable.

But it gets worse. Quality of the photographer is ill defined. Seems from the discussion there are at least two dimensions there, which again may or may not intersect:

  • an axis with competence [skill]

  • an axis with artistic vision, which you could call greatness

The way the OP started this thread is BTW only 1-dimensional.
