Why doesn't 12mp sensors in MFT have better high iso performance than 16mp??

Curious. For the same sensor size, a 12 mp sensor will have larger individual pixels than a 16 mp. Yet the 16 mp sensors have better high iso. Doesn't make sense. If one could have a latest tech in the 12 mp, it could potentially have phenomenal high iso and I for one would not mind 12 mp which is already plenty for me.

Anyways, curious.
