I'm pretty sure when I first turned mine on the LCD was entirely blank and off. You might have hit the button that cycles through what it displays. Even if its not off though displaying the info uses a lot less power than live view does. Since its not really an LCD its not back lit which means power only goes to the dots that are illuminated. Really though there are so many choices on how you can have the displays set up that no matter what they picked for the default most people would probably change it at least a bit.
