Thanks Fred and Chris for you encouraging comments. Great to hear from you again Matthias.

I wanted to get more of the Goose in frame but as most of you would know, approaching geese, let alone photographing these birds can be tricky. This was the only one I could get with the eyes sharp. With this goose and its friends being quite a nervous lot, flash was not an option. Thankfully the light was still low but strong.

In reply to your question Chris, lighting this type of low key shot in an ideal world is best done in a studio with a black backdrop and a single strobe plus hairlight. Good directional (hemispherical) light, rendering high contrast is necessary if you are shooting this outdoors, meaning that the goose will be lit on one side. The rest of the process can then be done in PP, not much to it really. Darkening areas already in the shadows is quite easy. The separation of the goose and the background in this case was easy with a shallow DOF. Good luck with your own goose.
