Personally I am not a fan of increasing resolution in sensors to ridiculous amounts.

I honestly can't see a good reason to go beyond 10MP for anyone who's purely shooting family/vacation shots; even for prints that's enough for a small poster.

The benefit of high resolution sensors could come into play if you're looking to crop closer to 100% in order to get the effect of a more zoomed-in image without using a longer lens.

Then again that's useless if your lens can't actually resolve that much detail; you don't just slap on a 50MP sensor and suddenly you get way more detail; you get the same detail/sharpness just spread over 50 million pixels.

If your glass was pretty much neck and neck with your old sensor as far as optical resolution, a higher MP sensor won't help. Often that's not the case; the lens has more optical resolution than the sensor has physical resolution - but as sensors become denser, that's becoming less common.

Long story short: the bigger sensors only make sense with really high quality lenses that have high optical resolution. Since you appear to be using L-series lenses I'm assuming that might be the case; all the same I think 18MP is more than enough - it's a safe number.
