the profile controls the color and the media controls how much ink gets laid down and other non-color mapping

Thanks Howard for clearing that up, but it makes you wonder. With all the special calibrations and profiles that go into color management, doesn't it seem a little odd that the medium choice ends up just being an approximation, i.e. one selects a paper sort of like Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss? Is there no way to enter the specific non-OEM media properties into the printer driver so the non-OEM choices will be available in the Printer > Properties dialog box?

Or is it suficient to adjust things in the color management area because the non-OEM profiles are built with the same media assumptions as you are faced with when using the non-OEM papers?

Yes, if you ever get around to making your own custom profiles it will be clear. Each profile is made with a specific media setting. If the paper manufacture’s profiler or profiling service is any good, it will produce profiles using several related media settings and go with the one that works best.

The media settings govern the gross parameters, anything that doesn’t have to do with the color: thickness, weight, surface texture, platen gap, photo/matte black ink, absorbency, how much ink to put down.
