It certainly works well on highlights but, when I experimented, I noticed quite a bit more shadow noise than I would have expected if I had raised the "ISO" by two stops. Only noticeable at the pixel level though. My choice with high contrast scenes is just to shoot RAW and process the image to suit. There's ample dynamic range for most subjects.

I am a bit mystified by the JPG processing in-camera as it clips highlights way more than is necessary. Add the cameras tendency to slightly overexpose and highlights are always at risk. However, it must be the easiest camera ever to adjust exposure compensation, with that big fat dial!

Note, too, that the camera screen shows clipped highlights when, in fact, they show up just fine later on the computer. It's definitely a camera that benefits a bit of learning.
