Now I see what you mean - you've selected the "Open device to view files using Windows Explorer" (and also checked in the checkbox to do it all the time).

However, this is read-only access (except for deleting images / directories. The names of the latter are, BTW, also obfuscated), at least on my non-jailbroken iPad 3. Are you sure you can create new directories on your iPad, using Windows Explorer? Is it jailbroken?

Sorry I gave a wrong impression, I meant opening a directory on the PC to move the ipad files to.

I was addressing using the ipad as a storage device for photos and then transferring them to my desktop.
You are correct you can't go back the other way conveniently.

I find the Pad excellent for displaying travel photos (Even doing mild edits) and then unloading at home.

I do put jpegs onto the pad by writing into a DCIM file on an SD card then using the photo kit . I don't bother with itunes.
