Eco systems

It's about eco systems.
In the camera world the eco system is your camera + bodies + accessories.

If Nikon/canon/whoever started making lens' for another format like m43, doesn't help bring anymore people to their eco system. And for them people buying new bodies every year is a key to their success. Lens' last a long time and people don't upgrade them every year, but bodies they do. And once bodies get good enough (D800), THEN they'll look to upgrade to better lens'. It's a cycle that has to keep going.

Microsoft/Apple are different, the software + OS isn't the ecosystem. The Ecosystem is the file formats. If Microsoft can get their file formats (.doc, xls, etc..) accepted by everyone regardless of OS, then they win. Office (used to anyways) be a huge money maker. Once a company is committed to a file format (or students), they usually will continue to use that format for life, which means frequent updates to newer versions and such.

Why does apple put itunes on windows? Because it's the ipods/iphones/ipads/music store/app store that apple cares about, and where the money is.
