Whole plate --> half plate --> quarter plate --> MF --> FF (135) --> HF (APS-C)

The march of progress is inevitable. As soon as smaller is as good as bigger used to be it starts to replace it. Bigger remains, but as a niche.

About 3 years ago I calculated (in a thumb suck sort of way) that a 1" sensor was the minimum that would justify interchangeable lenses. Nikon came to the same conclusion (probably about the same time). Now I am beginning to wonder. Maybe the Q system is only a little bit premature.

However, the laws of physics do pose a barrier, but we have not reached it yet.

I used to think I could spot a FF image - mainly due to the dynamic contrast, but then I saw some NEX-5N and NEX-7 that matched the FF. Yes, FF does offer advantages in some respects, but for most people APS-C is more that good enough.
