Was you backup camera in the shop also? Any pro has the tools needed to deliver the promised services, that is the main difference between an amateur and pro, both can create interesting images but the. Pro is paid because he is expected by the client to do more than create interesting images, he is paid to not create problems for the client. Problem solving, not creating, it the worth of a pro.
Would have rented
You could have used your required, essential backup
You could have hired a pro as sub
You could have bought another camera for the gig
You could have found a D4 pretty easily, they are easier to find than D800's

What you Did do is put your client in a risky position if they required having shots suitable for their purpose!
