I would recommend everyone to test their optics at different f-stops and different focusing distances. Check the corner sharpness too. Different lenses behave really differently. As a general rule I've found out that the really bad deterioration starts to get well visible once you hit f 16 - 22.

But what's strange here is that some lenses that are made for macro shooting deteriorate the image quality really badly already at f 16. As an example of that, the otherwise pretty good Micro-Nikkor 55mm/ 2.8 is just rubbish at f 22, and that's a problem when shooting three dimensional things in close up. It's hard to make the right choice between acceptable sharpness and adequate DOF, since it's almost always too shallow.
