Actually, no.

The eight people (which isn't a "bunch") in the release you linked are being promoted (that's different than fired) because three people (that's really, really not a "bunch") retired.

And this, for a little background on the people involved.

Michio Kariya has been with Nikon for 45 years, the last five of those as CEO, and turned 70 this year. He's been trying to retire for two years now, and is considered a major success. The other two who retired are the two oldest members of the board, aged 65 and 63, respectively.

Contrary to what you may have heard, Japanese workers are permitted to retire occasionally.

It's pretty weird that Nikon would get rid of all of these people responsible for such high quality results.

The only thing "weird" here is your interpretation of events. Although "uneducated" or "misinformed" might be better descriptions.
