My tuppence worth:

NIkon Australia outsourced their repairs to three long standing and respected repair companies years ago. They do not do repairs themselves. They just assess and warranty work goes in the overnight bag to Japan.

What has changed is that the latest Nikon DSLR cameras and G lenses have very limited repair-ability. Things like shutters and sensors can be swapped out but not deeply embedded circuit boards. Most likely you will get a replacement. You can tell if its gone to Japan when they quote you 3-6 weeks.

For repairs to legacy Nikon film cameras and lenses, still go to your favorite repair guy. He holds all the spares for Nikon SLRs anyway. Right now, for them, they are flat out as there is a resurgence in film and older classic cameras.
