Having gone from a 1D Mark III to the D3 and from Canon lenses to Nikon glass I can state that the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 is vastly superior in IQ to the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 II, the 24-70mm from Nikon is on par in terms of IQ with the Canon but the Nikon has reliable autofocus unlike the Canon version, and the 70-200mm f2.8 VR II is sharper than the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens.

There are no Nikon equivalents to the 24-105mm f4 IS and the 70-200mm f4 lenses but only the 24-105mm is one that I would even consider owning. The Nikon 80-400mm is not as good as the current Canon 100-400mm IS but neither lens is a stellar performer.

Nikon lens do not need constant recalibration for accurate autofocus and in the USA they come with a 5-year warranty. Things to consider when contemplating a switch.

If you shoot with flash the exposure accuracy with the Nikon cameras and flash is also much better than with the Canon cameras and the 580EX II.
