Buying Cameras in the US

The Nikon 800 is about £750 cheaper in the US than in the UK. I have been advised that if I travel to New York and buy photographic gear I can avoid paying import tax back in the UK as long as I unpack and actually use the cameras/lenses in the US. Does anyone know if this is correct? I don't want to do anything illegal and I certainly don't want to get a hefty tax bill back at Heathrow. I would appreciate your thoughts.
