I've played a bit with 7D files with extreme shadow lifts in LR3.3 compared to converting the RAW file in DPP and sending to CS5 as a 16 bit Tiff. In that situation LR3.3 seems to emphasize the red channel and the noise is much greater as is the evidence of patterns. The DPP conversion worked in CS5 has a more neutral color profile and nowhere near the noise or patterns. Have you
experimented with using DPP in this way?

There is a world of difference between LR 3 and LR4. Fill light is no match for the new shadows slider and also highlight recovery is much better. I checked DPP once again as I have done before and DPP cannont recover the highligths as LR4 can. I didn't bother to look at the shadows where LR4 is very good.

I've yet to upgrade to LR4 but plan to do so.

What are you waiting for? Upgrade as fast as you can

Maybe this weekend
