The 18-55 ‘kit’ lens makes a good case for the law of diminishing returns. In other words, there’s a point where you have to spend a lot more money in order to get some significant additional value. In the final analysis, it’s the photograph that leaves the impression, and very few of us can come to any conclusions about the lens used to take a picture.
That said, my only reservations about the 18-55 are mere ergonomic annoyances: 1) the stiffness of the focus ring on every sample I have tried, and 2) ease of storage compromised by having the full retraction point at mid focal range.
