It is very sharp without the high contrast edges.

I've been studying these samples for a few hours. The images are very sharp, but the contrast is low, even at the edges. I think people have gotten used to the sharpening that the lack of USM gives the illusion of being not sharp.

My personal opinion is that the sharpness without the high contrast edges images gives the images a film like quality. it reminds me of black and white movies from the 50's. I think we can try to mimic it, but probably won't be able to match what this camera can do because it is what it has been built to do.
